SACRAMENTO, CA — A 28-year-old Sacramento woman is in custody after police say she attacked multiple people, including a teenager, then barricaded herself in an apartment complex and faced officers in a standoff Tuesday evening.
The Sacramento Police Department identified the woman as Aeiryn Warren. She is being held in the Sacramento County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, battery, child endangerment and resisting arrest. Police said she also had outstanding warrants, though they did not release details about those cases.
Police say assault began near Howe Avenue and Highway 50
Officers were called just after 6:30 p.m. to the 20 block of Howe Avenue, near Highway 50 and north of Folsom Boulevard, after reports of an assault. Police said the confrontation involved a woman later identified as Warren.
According to investigators, Warren punched a 15-year-old. The teenager’s parent also suffered a minor injury. Both were taken to a hospital after the attack, police said.
Authorities have not said what led up to the violence. They did say the incident quickly expanded beyond the first assault and drew a larger police response in the apartment area.
Knife attack left one resident with a neck injury
Police said Warren also swung a knife at another person during the confrontation. Another witness, Ian Johnson, said he tried to pull her away from other people before she turned on him.
Johnson told KCRA 3 that Warren later returned with a kitchen knife and cut him, leaving a mark on his neck. He said he did not realize he had been injured right away because he was focused on keeping her away from others.
His account matched the broader police description of an attack involving several victims and a weapon. Investigators did not provide an updated condition for Johnson or describe any additional treatment he may have needed.
SWAT team and negotiators were called to the apartment complex
As the situation unfolded, police brought in a SWAT team and crisis negotiators to the Powell’s Landing apartment complex in an effort to get Warren to surrender peacefully. KCRA 3 video showed officers breaking a window and entering the unit.
The response reflected the concern officers had about the armed suspect and the number of people involved. Police have not said how long the standoff lasted before Warren was taken into custody.
Officials have also not said whether anyone else inside the complex was hurt during the law enforcement response. The focus of the case remained on the initial assaults and the effort to safely end the confrontation.
Witnesses described a fight involving a mother and daughter
People who spoke with KCRA 3 said the teenager and the parent injured in the first assault were a mother and daughter. Police confirmed only that the teen and the parent were attacked and later hospitalized.
The witness accounts added more detail to a chaotic scene in which several people were involved before officers arrived. Johnson said he stepped in because he wanted to keep anyone else from getting hurt.
Those accounts also helped explain why the response grew so quickly from a reported assault to a multi-agency operation at the apartment complex. Police have not released a full timeline of each contact between Warren and the victims.
