DESOTO, TX — A neighborhood dispute in DeSoto ended with one man dead and another facing a murder charge after police say a confrontation on Killdee Court escalated into a fatal shooting Thursday morning.
Authorities identified the suspect as 32-year-old Joseph Bryant and the victim as 36-year-old Josephus Sanders. Police said Bryant is accused of shooting Sanders around 8 a.m. in the 1500 block of Killdee Court, then leaving the scene.
Sanders was found in the street with an apparent gunshot wound. Officers began lifesaving efforts before he was taken to Methodist Dallas Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Police say the men lived on the same street and had a longstanding dispute
Investigators said Bryant and Sanders knew each other and lived on the same street. Police described their relationship as involving a long-running dispute, though they have not publicly explained what started it.
The shooting happened in a residential area, adding to the sense of concern among neighbors. A disagreement that had apparently been building for some time ended in violence in broad daylight, according to DeSoto police.
Authorities have not said whether anyone else was present when the confrontation began. They also have not announced any further threat to the neighborhood, but the case remains under active investigation.
Surveillance video appears to show the shooting unfold in the street
Police said surveillance video from a nearby residence appears to capture the moments before and during the shooting. According to investigators, Sanders is seen walking down the street before Bryant approaches him.
After a brief verbal exchange, the video allegedly shows Bryant firing at Sanders at close range. Police said Bryant then drove away from the scene.
Video evidence can be important in homicide investigations, and in this case it appears to give detectives a clearer picture of how quickly the encounter turned deadly. Police have not released the footage publicly.
Bryant returned to the scene about 90 minutes later and surrendered
About an hour and a half after the shooting, Bryant came back to the scene at police request and surrendered, authorities said. Family members helped with that process, according to investigators.
Police said Bryant was taken into custody and is being held at the DeSoto Regional Jail pending arraignment. The charge against him is murder.
The timeline suggests the response from officers and Bryant’s family played a direct role in ending the search for the suspect. Police did not say what Bryant told investigators when he returned.
Sanders was rushed to Methodist Dallas Medical Center but did not survive
Officers found Sanders in the street and immediately tried to help before paramedics took over. He was transported to Methodist Dallas Medical Center, but doctors there pronounced him dead.
He was 36 years old. Police have not released any additional information about his background or about funeral arrangements.
