WASHINGTON COUNTY, OR — A three-vehicle crash in rural Washington County left one driver dead and two other people injured Thursday, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
The collision happened on Northwest Cornelius Schefflin Road, north of Cornelius, and prompted deputies to close nearby roads while they investigated. One person died at the scene, while the two injured drivers were taken to a hospital.
Authorities did not immediately release the names of those involved or say what led to the crash. The investigation remained active after the wreck, which happened in a rural area west of the Portland metro area.
Deputies say the crash happened north of Cornelius
The sheriff’s office said the wreck took place on Northwest Cornelius Schefflin Road, a stretch that runs through a rural part of the county north of Cornelius. That area has a mix of farm land, homes and narrower roads than the busier routes closer to the city.
Officials said the crash involved three vehicles. They have not described how the vehicles collided or whether weather, speed or another factor may have played a role.
The location mattered for traffic as well as the investigation. With the road system already limited in the area, even one major crash can force detours and slow response times for drivers trying to get around the scene.
One driver died at the scene as two others were hospitalized
According to the sheriff’s office, one of the drivers died where the crash occurred. The two other drivers were injured and transported to a hospital for treatment.
No further details were released about their conditions, and officials did not say whether the injuries were minor or life-threatening. Their identities were also not made public Thursday.
When a crash turns fatal, investigators typically work to document the scene, examine the vehicles and piece together the order of events. In this case, deputies had not announced any conclusions about responsibility or cause.
Road closures spread beyond the crash scene
Deputies shut down all lanes on both Northwest Cornelius Schefflin Road and NW Roy Road while they handled the crash and the follow-up investigation. The closures affected more than just the immediate wreck site.
That kind of response is common after a serious collision because investigators need space to examine debris, vehicle positions and roadway marks. It also allows emergency crews to move safely around the scene.
Officials did not say how long the roads would stay closed. Drivers in the area were left to find alternate routes as law enforcement worked to clear the roadway and document what happened.
