EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — An East Brunswick woman faces obstruction charges after police said they found her 17-year-old son hiding in a basement crawl space during a search for the missing teen.
The case began Sept. 15 after the boy’s father called police at about 7:47 p.m. to say the teenager had not shown up for a scheduled 6 p.m. drop-off. Investigators entered the boy into the National Crime Information Center database and began looking for him with patrol officers and detectives.
Police said the teen’s mother, Jennifer Buckley, told officers that her son was missing and was reluctant to go to his father’s home. She also raised concerns that he might be a danger to himself.
Father’s call started the missing person investigation
According to police, the missing-person response started when the father reported that the 17-year-old had not arrived as expected for the exchange. That call prompted officers to treat the case as a safety concern and begin a wider search.
Authorities said the teen’s statements and the mother’s concerns led them to add him to the national missing-person database. Patrol units and detectives then worked to locate him while the search continued over several days.
The initial information suggested the boy might have been away from home, but police said follow-up work later raised questions about what had actually happened. Those discrepancies became central to the later search of the residence.
Detectives returned to the home after inconsistencies emerged
Police said detectives noticed differences in the information they had been given and went back to Buckley’s home to check the residence again. That second look proved decisive.
During the search, officers found the missing teenager hiding inside a crawl space in the basement. Police said he had stayed at the home throughout the search period.
Investigators concluded that the teen was not out somewhere unknown, but instead was inside the house while officers were still trying to locate him. That finding changed the case from a missing-person search into an obstruction investigation.
Police say the mother helped conceal the teen
Investigators determined that Buckley had helped keep her son’s location hidden from law enforcement, according to police. They said that assistance contributed to the difficulty in finding him during the search.
The department has not said why the teen was hiding in the basement crawl space or how long he had been there before officers found him. Police also have not released additional details about the family’s circumstances beyond what was needed to explain the search.
The arrest followed the discovery of the boy at the home and the police conclusion that Buckley obstructed the administration of law. Officials have not said whether the teen was injured or needed medical care.
