One Person Killed and Another Hurt in Single-Vehicle Capital Beltway Crash Near Maryland Route 50 in Prince George’s County Monday Morning

Maryland State Police investigate a crash scene on the Capital Beltway near Route 50

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — One person was killed and another was hospitalized after a single-vehicle crash on the Capital Beltway in Prince George’s County early Monday, Maryland State Police said.

The crash happened shortly before 6 a.m. on the Outer Loop of Interstate 495 near Maryland Route 50. Investigators said a Subaru Crosstrek struck a roadside jersey barrier. Police have not said what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.

Both people inside the vehicle were taken to a hospital. One later died there, while the other was being treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Crash happened before sunrise on the Outer Loop near Route 50

State police said the wreck occurred on the Outer Loop of I-495, a stretch of the Beltway that carries heavy commuter traffic through the county. The location was near Maryland Route 50, one of the major road connections in the area.

The timing of the crash also likely affected the morning commute. Before 9:30 a.m., WTOP Traffic reported that a couple of lanes on the Beltway had reopened, suggesting crews were working to clear the scene while traffic moved through the area.

Officials did not immediately provide information about the weather, road surface or any other conditions that may have played a role. The preliminary finding only identified the Subaru’s collision with the barrier.

Maryland State Police say the Subaru hit a jersey barrier

According to the preliminary investigation, the Subaru Crosstrek slammed into a roadside jersey barrier. Those concrete barriers are commonly used to separate lanes or shield vehicles from dangerous roadside objects.

Police have not said whether speed, distraction, a medical emergency or another factor contributed to the crash. No additional vehicles were reported to be involved, and investigators described the incident as a single-vehicle wreck.

The agency said it is still working to determine exactly what happened in the moments before impact. For now, the available facts point to a sudden crash that ended in serious consequences for both occupants.

One victim died after hospital transport and the other survived with serious injuries

Both occupants were transported to a hospital after the crash. Police said one person later died, while the other remains under treatment for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities did not publicly identify either person. No ages, hometowns or other personal details were released.

That means investigators and the public are still waiting for a fuller picture of who was in the vehicle and how badly each person was hurt in the collision. For now, the confirmed outcome is one death and one serious injury.

Traffic reopened gradually while investigators worked the scene

WTOP Traffic reported that by before 9:30 a.m., a couple of lanes on the Beltway had reopened. That suggests the crash response and cleanup were still affecting the roadway several hours after the initial call.

State police are leading the investigation. Their work typically includes documenting the scene, checking vehicle damage and interviewing witnesses if any are available, although officials have not released those details yet.

Because the wreck happened during the morning rush, even limited lane closures can create delays across the Beltway. Drivers in the area were dealing with the impact while crews handled the crash site.

What remains unanswered as the investigation continues

Several important questions remain open. Police have not said why the Subaru drifted into the barrier, whether impairment or a mechanical problem may have been involved, or whether anyone was wearing a seat belt.

Authorities also have not identified the people who were injured or explained whether the hospital will release any additional information. The investigation is being handled by Maryland State Police, and no further findings were immediately announced.

For now, the case stands as a deadly early-morning Beltway crash that left one person dead, another seriously hurt and commuters facing delays on one of the region’s busiest highways.
