The dead man was identified as Derek Spencer, 44. Officials said the case unfolded after a string of violent and destructive acts that included vehicle theft, gunfire, and a reported threat against a couple. Investigators said the woman, Cheryl Macy, was alone in her home when she was shot.
Authorities said it was still too early to determine why Spencer entered the home or why Macy was targeted. The sequence of events stretched across two counties and ended only after deputies tracked Spencer through rugged terrain.
