CASS LAKE, MN — A 17-year-old boy from Walker died in rural Cass Lake after what investigators say was a fatal gunshot wound, and the death has now been ruled a homicide. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office said the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office made the determination after an autopsy.
No arrests have been announced, and officials said the case remains under active investigation. The boy was found dead in a yard near John Moose Drive Northwest after authorities were called to the scene Sunday morning, Sept. 13.
Ambulance request led deputies to the scene near John Moose Drive Northwest
The sheriff’s office said it received a request at 7:57 a.m. Sunday from the Leech Lake Tribal Police for an ambulance in the area of John Moose Drive Northwest. Medical crews and officers responded to the location and found the teenager already deceased in the yard.
Authorities have not publicly released the boy’s name, identifying him only as a juvenile from Walker. The circumstances leading up to the shooting have not been described by investigators, who have not said how long he had been there before help arrived.
Multiple agencies joined the investigation soon after the discovery
Investigators quickly brought in additional law enforcement resources after the boy was found. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office said it is working with the Leech Lake Tribal Police Department, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Minnesota State Patrol.
The Paul Bunyan Drug Task Force is also assisting. Authorities did not explain the role each agency is playing, but the breadth of the response suggests the case is being handled as a major violent-crime investigation in the Cass Lake area.
Medical examiner ruled the death a homicide after autopsy
The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the manner of death after completing an autopsy. In cases like this, a homicide ruling means the death was caused by another person’s actions, not that a suspect has been identified or charged.
